Base 31
PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, ON
Steph was selected to create a painting for the Aviators' Garden at Base 31, a revitalized WWII air force base in Prince Edward County, ON that is being transformed into a cultural destination.
Prince Edward County is home to an impressive number of Monarch butterflies. During their eight month migration from southern Ontario to the forested mountains of central Mexico, four generations of Monarch Butterflies are born and die. How they find their way back to their wintering site remains a magical mystery.
Inspired by the natural phenomenon of the Monarch butterflies' great migration, Steph's piece, Migratory Metamorphosis, imagines the Monarch's journey as a portal and reflects their important role in nature and at the Base 31 site.
Migratory Metamorphosis
After painting a wood panel for the Aviators' Garden at Base 31, Steph was invited to paint a shipping container for the entrance of the garden.
The mural design, inspired by the Ruby-throated hummingbird of the PEC region, symbolizes joy, lightness, and good luck, and aims to bring vibrancy to the community after the heaviness of the pandemic.
The project is ongoing and will be fully completed and installed in the spring of 2023.
