San Mezcal

San Miguel De Allende, Mexico

A Painting Series For A Mezcaleria & Restaurant.

While doing a 6 week artist residency in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico in 2021, Steph was commissioned by a mezcaleria to design and paint a series of paintings, to be used as a form of storytelling while doing mezcal tastings.

Inspired by the Aztecan mythology of Mayahuel (the Agave goddess) and the process of Mezcal, the series depicts the 7 year life-span of the rich and magical Agave plant, its pollinators, and the iconography behind the legend of Mayahuel.

During the residency, Steph spent most of her time hiking in the region, learning about the different endemic Agave plants and animals, as well as, the process of making pulque, tequila and mezcal.

The 15ft x 3ft triptych is permanently displayed at San Mezcal, a popular bar/restaurant in San Miguel De Allende for Mezcal tasting and authentic Mexican food.
